Family Conference – Session 1, Building a God Centred Family

At Bible Church, Manurewa

,Discussing the roles of the Church and the Family.

  • National Centre for Family Integrated Churches

  • The Church and the Family are two holy institutions, created by God
  • Established three governments: family, church, state.  Each has limitations.

The correct pattern:

  • Husbands, lay down their lives for their wives (subsume our selfish desires);
  • Wives, are helpers for their husbands (in mutual submission);
  • Children are obedient to their parents.
  • All three are pictures of the Salvation message.

Jurisdictions are important:

  • The three roles (family, church, government) in correct alignment;
  • Harmony ensues.

Fatherhood is under attack

  • of the devil
  • Restore Biblical Fatherhood
  • The family is the incubator for qualified leaders in churches (if you can’t lead your own family, how can you lead a church?)

  • Things are broken
  • But God is good
  • God is restoring things

Return to the proposition that Scripture is sufficient; Scripture is all you need to restore families to where they should be: bringing Repentence and Reformation.

  1. 30 years ago, as a reaction against pagen education, women in America decided to start homeschooling. It was illegal at the time, but that has now changed. Shortly after, men realised they didn’t know how to be godly fathers, because they didn’t have role-models. That has now changed.

  2. What does a God-centred family look like? Psalm 127
    A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

    1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
    the builders labor in vain.
    Unless the Lord watches over the city,
    the guards stand watch in vain.
    2 In vain you rise early
    and stay up late,
    toiling for food to eat—
    for he grants sleep to[a] those he loves.

    3 Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
    4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
    5 Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.
    They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents in court.

  3. Psalm 128
    A song of ascents.

    1 Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
    who walk in obedience to him.
    2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;
    blessings and prosperity will be yours.
    3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
    your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
    4 Yes, this will be the blessing
    for the man who fears the Lord.

    5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;
    may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
    all the days of your life.
    6 May you live to see your children’s children—
    peace be on Israel.

  4. 6 Foundation Stones for Restoring a God-Centred Family
    1. Mercies of God. We are all sinners, but God forgives. Get over yourself, repent and go in the right direction.
    2. Sovereignty of God. Don’t worry, God is in control. Don’t neglect fasting and praying for your children.
    3. Fear of God. Blessings ensue: happiness, prosperity, children, grandchildren
    4. Word of God. Be not governed by your own passions and traditions, but by the Word of God. This book contradicts every culture on Earth. It offends. Be calibrated by the Word of God.
    5. Love of God. Family life should pattern the Trinity. Mutual submission, honour, love and respect.
    6. Centrality of God in your family. Matthew Henry (a Puritan author) 1704, “The church in the house”. Established a pattern of family worship, where his kids left his house with a hand-written commentary each (in their own handwriting) of the entire Bible.
