Hippolite Musings

In May, I managed to:

  • Had a birthday;
  • Attended a wedding;
  • Saw a movie (Iron Man 2);
  • Presented a guest lecture at VUW;
  • Attended a committee meeting (or 2);
  • Played some squash;
  • Took ownership of another community web site (my third);
  • Indoctrinated my kids into programming (with Scratch); and
  • Moved my home wireless modem from downstairs to upstairs.

World Outreach

  • THAILAND.  The situation in Bangkok between the "red shirt" political protesters and the government remains critical.  Many feel this week could be D-Day.  Close to 40 protesters have been killed and many more injured. Many foreign embassies have advised their respective citizens to leave the country. Please remember Thailand in prayer, in particular that the influence of the powers of darkness be broken and that people will turn to the Prince of Peace!
  • NTH INDIA.  Kitbok Ryntathiang, WO Nth India director writes, "Please pray for the Meitei people. There is deep political turmoil developing between the Nagas (Nagaland) who are pushing the Meitei to the edge. This is affecting distribution of basic food items which are soaring in price here in N-E India. Petrol is now USD 4.00 a litre – when available. One 15kg cylinder of cooking gas now costs the Meitei USD 35.00.  During the past 4-5 years the Holy Spirit has drawn thousands of Meitei to Himself and WO church planting teams are very much involved in this.  It does not help when the Nagas (who call themselves Christians) cause such problems for the Meitei people. Please pray for a solution.  Both the Nagas and the Meitei need our prayers.”
  • INDONESIA.  Sam & Carol Soukotta are very grateful to those who are praying and who have contributed to the fund to buy the land where the Tawangmangu Bible College premises are located in Central Java – for the past 40+ years. To date more than USD 43,000.00 has been raised with a further $330,000.00 needed before the January 2011 deadline. Please keep praying that the necessary funds will be forthcoming and this marvellous facility will continue to be used to train up Godly men & women for ministry service in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim populated nation.
  • AUSTRALIA.  Chris & Nadine Brittain have less than one month to go before they leave Australia to settle and serve in East Africa with WO.  They still have not raised their full budget and need the Lord to do a miracle on their behalf in this area. Let’s unite our hearts and faith with them in prayer, in particular that their budget goal will be reached by the time they fly out of Sydney next month.
  • KEY POSITION. Please keep praying that the position of WO Operations Director  will be filled soon. We believe the Holy Spirit is already stirring someone’s heart in preparation for this call!   Please direct any interest to Luke Chong in the first instance.  The role of an Operations Director is a very key & important position in WOI, especially so with the organization steadily growing each year in both field personnel and ministries.  Please be praying with us for the right person.
  • RESOURCES.  Missionaries have big dreams and choose to let the Holy Spirit direct what they can / cannot do – rather than their often limited resources. I have compiled a “wish list” of financial projects / programs that many different WO ministries are looking to the Lord to provide resources for.  Please pray with us that there will be an extra steady supply of resources in the coming weeks that will help bless the projects in need.  Thank you.

  • NTH ASIA. Thank for your prayers during Mary’s & my travels to Korea and Japan earlier this month. It was so good to meet up with the 3 different WO teams in Korea and also catch up with the progress and development of their respective ministries.  Tension continues to build up between North & South Korea over the sinking of a South Korean warship last month killing more than 40 sailors. Pray this does not get out of hand.  The mission consultation I attended in Tokyo drew more than 1200 participants from all continents. The gathering was also a 100 year celebration commemorating the first global mission conference that took place in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1910.  Some truly exciting testimonies were shared of the progress been made of getting the Gospel established among all the world’s ethnic people groups. The past decade has seen more Muslims become followers of Jesus Christ than in the past 1000 years. Praise His Name!
  • THAILAND. Lorraine Dierck reports that the past few weeks has seen many Thais come to Christ through different ministry initiatives – even during the presentpolitical crisis. She writes:"  With the political unsettlement now into its 3rd month  this is an excellent time to share about Jesus, the Prince of Peace.  My colleague Chuenjit told me this week that she led 23 young people to Christ the past weekend. Last week one of our WO church-planting team members told me they are having baptisms every day, are seeing miraculous healings and are believing the Lord for 50 new churches to be planted through their ministry in the next 3 months. Praise God for such open hearts.

    • Russian Navy To Maintain Global Presence
      June 02, 2010
      The Russian Navy considers intensive combat training and continuing its presence in the world’s oceans a priority, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. To accomplish these goals, Russian warships will take part in a number of large-scale naval drills, continue patrols of pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast and make about 50 port calls in foreign countries in the second half of 2010.

    • Japanese PM Resigns: Stocks Drop
      June 02, 2010
      Asian stocks fell, dragging the MSCI Asia Pacific Index lower for a second day amid concerns of political instability in Japan after the country’s prime minister resigned. "It’s hard to say that Japan’s economy will do better on this change," said Ayako Sera, a strategist at Tokyo-based Sumitomo Trust & Banking Co., which manages the equivalent of $307 billion. "On a long-term view, there is still a sense of uncertainty."

    • Gaza-Bound Turkish Flotilla Carried Possible Terrorists
      June 01, 2010
      Dozens of passengers who were aboard the Mavi Marmara Turkish passenger ship are suspected of having connections with global jihad-affiliated terrorist organizations, defense officials said on Tuesday, amid growing concerns that Turkish warships would accompany a future flotilla to the Gaza Strip. According to the defense officials, the IDF has identified about 50 passengers on the ship who could have terrorist connections with global jihad-affiliated groups. Those with possible terror connections have refused to identify themselves and did not carry passports.

    • Robot Cuts Oil Pipe; Cap Coming Soon?
      June 01, 2010
      A new flow of oil emerged from BP’s damaged undersea well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday evening after a remote-controlled submarine successfully cut into the well’s riser pipe. BP used robots in its latest attempt to curtail the flow of crude from the largest spill in U.S. history, which spread to barrier islands off Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday. When the robot submarines cut into the undersea well’s riser pipe, a fresh spew of oil temporarily obscured the view of the mechanical arm. The cut was a first step toward placing a cap over the well that has spewed hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico every day since late April.

    • The Chameleon Neutrino
      June 01, 2010
      After three years of monitoring multiple billions of "muon" neutrinos beamed to them through the earth from CERN 456 miles away, they had spotted one that had turned into a "tau" neutrino. Behind that scientific terminology lies the long-sought proof that the three varieties of neutrinos – sub-atomic particles that with others form the universe’s basic elements – can switch appearance, like the chameleon lizard.

    • ‘Ardi’ Has Lost Her Human Glitter
      June 01, 2010
      Last fall "Ardi" came onto the missing link scene with a bang. The journal Science called her the "breakthrough of the year." So did Time Magazine. We covered a few lone dissenters to the Ardi hype here on ENV. But now Time Magazine is starting to go over apex of the hype curve. In an article titled, "Ardi: The Human Ancestor Who Wasn’t?," Time notes, "Two new articles being published by Science question some of the major conclusions of Ardi’s researchers, including whether this small, strange-looking creature is even a human ancestor at all." Likewise, Nature reports, "Ardi may be more ape than human."

    • Tourists Visit Babylon Despite Iraq’s Troubles
      May 21, 2010
      Ongoing conflict has overshadowed Iraq’s place as the "Cradle of Civilization," housing extraordinary sites like Babylon, just outside Baghdad. But, an improving, if fragile, security situation means that, after years of isolation intrepid travellers can now fly directly to Iraq from Austria, Germany, Greece, Norway, Sweden and the UK as well as numerous cities in the Middle East. Specialist tour operators are now stepping into the tourism void, catering to the smattering of tourists with an approach more Indiana Jones than package tour.

    Why I Am A Climate Realist

    This is what we are up against

    It shows how seriously the climate alarmists take this issue!
    There is going to be a march about climate change and specifically
    about reducing methane,

    It will be held on Sat outside parliament and is urging people to go

    Subject: Why the solution to global warming is in the hands of

    Why the solution to global warming is in the hands of individuals

    Press Release by Todays Choice, Tomorrows Life at 11:16 am, 27 May 2010

    ‘Today’s Choice Tomorrow’s Life’, raising awareness about the urgency of climate change and how the most effective solution lies in the hands of individuals, will take place at the Beehive this Saturday 29 May at 10am, one week before World Environment Day.

    An estimated 200 participants will be coming together, some from as far as Auckland and Whangarei, to hear speakers including Paul Bruce (Greater Wellington Regional Councillor), and Jeffrey Masson, international best-selling author.

    In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister the organisers are urging the Government to focus on reducing shorter-lived greenhouse gases such as Methane, as the quickest way to stop rising temperatures and subsequent  runaway global warming.  Copied to all MPs, the organisers would like to see Parliament seriously consider the proposal as an essential strategy for mitigating global warming in the near term, rather than focusing all attention on reducing carbon dioxide emissions which will not have any effect on cooling the planet immediately.  In NZ 90% of man-made methane emissions are from livestock.

    "Knowing that individuals have the biggest impact to help avoid any further increase in global temperatures is very empowering.  The easiest and quickest solution is in the hands of every individual by simply cutting down and eventually eliminating meat and other animal products." Said a spokesperson.

    Participants will join together about 11am to go through Lambton Quay with placards and slogans such as ‘There is no Planet B, Be Veg, Go Green’ and ‘We’re running out of time, Be Veg, Go Green’.

    There will be an anti-ETS protest held at Parliament on:

    Tuesday 22 June 2010.

    Everybody is strongly urged to attend and show their opposition to an ETS which will cost our economy $527million while being of no measurable benefit to the climate.

    Why I Am A Creationist

    Hi James

    For your reference:

    The 14 November 2009 edition of New Scientist has a summary of Darwin’s "Origin of the Species". At the end of the article, there are some quotes, including one from Francis Galton (who invented the term "eugenics" and was known of what would today be considered racist and classist viewpoints. Eugenics became one of the bases for ethnic cleansing ideals and possibly influenced Adolph Hitler).

    I immediately thought that this following comment, quoted from Galton, had a spiritual basis;

    The publication in 1859 of the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin made a marked epoch in my own mental development, as it did in that of human thought generally. Its effect was to demolish a multitude of dogmatic barriers by a single stroke, and to arouse a spirit of rebellion against all ancient authorities whose positive and unauthenticated statements were contradicted by modern science.

    (Emphasis my own).

    It seems to me that scientists simply used The Origin of the Species as an excuse for intellectual rebellion. Indeed, they still do, via contemporary evolutionary thinking.

    UN Takes Aim at Youth with Conferences in Mexico City and Tunisia
    By Samantha Singson

    (NEW YORK – C-FAM) The United Nations (UN) is now preparing to kick off the International Year of Youth.  The Government of Mexico will host a world conference on youth in August that will produce a ministerial declaration on youth and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  Conference organizers hope that the document will influence the high-level review on the Millennium Development Goals that takes place in September at the UN General Assembly.  While the Mexican World Conference on Youth (WCY) is not an official UN conference, it is being supported by several UN agencies, including: the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as well as other multilateral organizations.

    Human Rights Activists Call for a Super-Treaty Monitoring Body at UN
    By Terrence McKeegan, J.D.

    (NEW YORK – C-FAM)  A new law review article by Professor Michael O’Flaherty, rapporteur of the Yogyakarta Principles, calls for the melding of all UN human rights treaty-monitoring bodies into something like a single entity. He calls for the adoption of this reform without the required consent of the Member States that are parties to those treaties.

    Train a Child

    In May,

    • Tane began assisting Elim Church on Camera 2 in the main auditorium.

    • Hamish was very enthusiastic about learning Scratch.  Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web.

    • Aimée also attended Scratch.  She enjoyed it too, but for different reasons.  She and a little friend (she made on the spot) were giggling their heads off, designing new characters (called Sprites).

      Why I Am Pro-Israel

      Drama at Sea – War on Israel

      Situation at sea as reported in Jerusalem Post, HaAretz, and Ynet

      Hysterical reports and misinformation have beclouded the unfolding confrontation between the Gaza Flotilla and the Israeli Navy. NTV, the Turkish Television, reports up to 15 people killed, others reported 14. Perhaps the IDF’s (Israel Defense Forces) own reporting is the most accurate; it reported 10 dead and 10 commandos wounded, 2 seriously.

      The Israeli military said ten activists were killed after its troops came under fire while intercepting the convoy.

      "Navy fighters took control of six ships that tried to violate the naval blockade (of the Gaza Strip) …During the takeover, the soldiers encountered serious physical violence by the protesters, who attacked them with live fire," a military statement said.

      Activists attacked a commando with iron bars as he descended onto the ship from a helicopter, the army said. The IDF said its rules of engagement allowed troops to open fire in what it called a "life-threatening situation."

      Israel and Egypt imposed the blockade on Gaza after Hamas militants violently seized control of the seaside territory in June 2007.

      Israel says the measures are needed to prevent Hamas, which has fired thousands of rockets at Israel, from building up its arsenal.

      Israel has let ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since the three-week military offensive against Gaza’s Hamas rulers in January 2009. The flotilla bound for Gaza is the largest to date.

      Israel rejects claims of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying it allows more than enough food and medicine into the territory. The Israelis also point to the bustling smuggling industry along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, which has managed to bring consumer goods, gasoline and livestock into the seaside strip.

      Why has Turkey become The Champion of the Palestinian cause lately?

      The Turkish interest is in highlighting the plight of Palestinians at the hands of Israel, providing Ankara with a useful lever in the region to claim the mantle of the strongest defender of the Palestinians in Gaza (a reputation Iran has been attempting to build). (

      Hamas Prime Minister Haniyeh came on Al-Jazeera to condemn the "brutal attack" and called on the UN to intervene on the activists’ behalf.

      A bit of analysis

      As in most of the encounters with terror organizations such as Hamas and rest of the anti-Israel crowd, there is much misinformation flying around. The encounter now unfolding was actually the goal of the Flotilla organizers from the beginning; this is more about hating Israel than loving the Palestinians (see comment at the bottom regarding Turkey’s reason for involvement in this charade.) The goal is to de-legitimize and demonize the nation of Israel by making it look like a monster and an enemy of world peace and humanity.

      The organizers wanted the confrontation to be as violent as possible; it served their purposes much better. Thus, they intentionally put their people in harms way and although they declared that they would not resist the Israeli forces, apparently some of the activists came prepared with firearms.

      The Hebrew paper Yediot Aharonot has reported that the commandos said that some of the activists had planned to lynch any of the soldiers they could get their hands on. The soldiers reported that they encountered fierce violence and were attacked with live fire, long knives and bats.

      The Flotilla was given the choice to follow the navy ships peacefully to Ashdod, but the organizers chose the more sensational option.

      Israel has stated repeatedly: "Our war in Gaza is not against the Palestinians but against Hamas."

      Please do not be riled up by the confused reports you are getting in the media. Rather stand on the Word of God before the Lord and PRAY!

      Several prayer strategies you can take

      Pray for God’s full plan of salvation from Ezekiel 36-39 which includes:
      (When you pray into God’s Kingdom agenda with faith, He moves to fulfil it and removes all the obstacles to His plan along the way.)

      • Bringing the Jews back to the land of promise
      • Pouring out the Spirit upon them and cleansing them from all sin
      • Reestablishing God’ presence among His people (The Great Reconciliation)
      • Sanctifying God’s name by His wondrous work in His people
      • Uniting Israel under the rulership of the Messiah
      • Fighting Israel’s enemies and showing His great name and authority by what He does in the midst of the Nations who defy the Lord (see Ps. 2 as well)

      Pray specifically into what is happening on the ground right now

      • Psalm 9 (as we shared in our last Prayer Priority Update)
      • No weapon that is formed against you shall succeed, and you will condemn (prove to be guilty) every tongue that rises against you in judgment."
        Isaiah 54:17
      • Pray for much wisdom for the IDF and the government of Israel as things unfold.
      • Pray for Israel to be inspired and even prophetic in PR war (which is actually the main battle right now and not the mechanics of handling the Flotilla).
      • Pray for light to be shed and cut through all the lies and misinformation that is, no doubt, being spread by Arab and western media outlets, who are hostile to Israel. Stratfor reports that. "…. through reports broadcast by al Jazeera from the ship, the flotilla organizers appear to have been prepared to provoke the Israelis in order to gain considerable media exposure for their cause."
      • Pray for the wounded on both sides.

      More than ever, we need to walk with the Lord; in the knowledge of God and in His light. Ask the Lord for wisdom and understanding for the days we live in and seek His face. What we have had till now will not be enough to take us through the days just ahead.

      Blessings from Jerusalem,

      Ofer Amitai ( Senior Advisor to the IFI Board)

      To add a little to Ofer’s alert:

      We need to uphold P.M. Netanyahu and the government as they will come under intense pressure to lift the blockade of Gaza.

      Let us be very alert in the Spirit to the possibility that Turkey will not only organize a new Flotilla, but will escort it with their warships. If that happens it will change the situation dramatically.

      One of the main organizers of this "Flotilla" is Turkish IHH (Insani Yardim Vakfi, IHH, "humanitarian relief fund"). A radical Islamic organization which has connections with known terrorist organizations.

      A late breaking report says that the Chief of the Turkish Military has cut short a trip to Egypt and is returning home. In the past 40 years the Turkish Military has four times staged a military coup to "rescue secular Turkey". In the natural such an occurrence would be a blessing not just to Israel but to Turkey as well, which is descending into Islamic darkness.

      We also need to pray against a violent uprising amongst Israeli Arabs and the Arabs of Judea and Samaria.

      Many will say that in this lose-lose situation, Israel picked the bigger loss to go with. In reality Israel did the only thing it could have without damaging its deterrent posture with its enemies. The Nations do not need an excuse to oppose us and blame us – this is reality and the historical record these last few years proves this to be true.

      Let us remain alert in the dangerous and rapidly changing attack on Israel’s right to self-defence.

      Now also many nations have gathered against you, Who say, Let her be defiled, And let our eye look upon Zion. But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD, Nor do they understand His counsel; For He will gather them like sheaves to the threshing floor. Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion; For I will make your horn iron, And I will make your hooves bronze; You shall beat in pieces many peoples; I will consecrate their gain to the Lord and their substance to the Lord of the whole earth.

      Micah 4:11-13

      What is the truest definition of Globalization?

      Princess Diana’s death.

      How come?

      An English princess with an Egyptian boyfriend crashes in a French tunnel, riding in a German car with a Dutch engine, driven by a Belgian who was drunk on Scottish whisky, (check the bottle before you change the spelling), followed closely by Italian Paparazzi, on Japanese motorcycles, treated by an American doctor, using Brazilian medicines.

      This is sent to you by a Kiwi, using American Bill Gates’ technology, and you’re probably reading this on your computer, that uses Israeli chips, and a Korean monitor, assembled by Bangladeshi workers in a Singapore plant, transported by Australian truck drivers, hijacked by Indonesians, unloaded by Sicilian longshoremen, and trucked to you by Fijian illegals…..

      That, my friends, is Globalization!

      The Pilgrim’s Progress

      Title The Pilgrim’s Progress II
      Synopsis Christiana’s journey, following in the footsteps of her husband.
      Author John Bunyan
      Published First published 1693
      Revised text with new Introduction and Notes 1954
      Last reprinted 1964
      Aldine Press, Letchworth, Herts, Great Britain

      Tells a gentler story of the Pilgrimage, filling some gaps in the theology exposed by the 15 years between this and the earlier book.

      Different, but equally magnificent.

      Last month, I reviewed The Pilgrim’s Progress, written 15 years earlier, about Christiana’s husband Christian’s journey.  The two stories were both included in the one publication I read.

      From a male perspective, knowing that Mr Greatheart was there to always protect the family, did diminish the drama of the conflicts; but as a father, I found the discourses with the children particularly poignant.

      Specifically, I’ve been joking for 13 years about bringing back arranged marriages.  This book reinforces for me why its such a good idea!
