Hippolite Musings

Thought for the Day

I like observing people.  I don’t like watching TV News: too contrived; too edutainment.

This week was fascinating watching the effect the Sophie Elliot case was having.  Even I couldn’t help bumping into the constant news round-ups about it.

What was fascinating was observing how ordinary people (read: around the water cooler) could easily go along with the “experts” assessment of Clayton Weatherston as having narcissistic tendencies, and never once stop to consider that’s the norm for today’s materialistic world.

We’re all into self-actualisation and closure these days (as opposed to self-sacrifice and forgiveness).  Clayton was only doing what school taught him to do, just to a rather extreme measure.  Church teaches us the morals that “Thou Shalt Not Kill.”  Society teaches that it’s okay to do away with life, especially if it’s in the womb.

And I’m not sure I like the idea of the withdrawal of the defence of Provocation.  Not because it was relevant in this case; it wasn’t.  But if it’s useful for Battered Wives, then it’s appropriate for the blokes to use too.

The Bible is just and fair and merciful in distinguishing between murder (a deliberate act) and manslaughter (with no malice aforethought).  We should be too.

I don’t know if you noticed, but we’ve just had 24/7 DAY!

This is from a sermon which Roy Savage first preached at the ACE Student Conventions in 2001.

See Jeremiah 24:7 (Commitment) – “I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”

Also see chapter 24 verse 7:

  • Exodus (Obedience)
  • Psalms (Worship)
  • Proverbs (Wisdom)

A number of years back the 24/7 Squad launched. For the past few years, I have joined this group of mainly former students and volunteered to help run the student Conventions.

I hope that you have had a great week and an excellent 24/7 day.

Stay strong for God and instead of only on Sundays, choose to live 100% 4 Christ 24 hours a day 7 days a week. AND get out there and share this with others!

4 Things That David Let Go Of, so that he could embrace dancing with the Father

  • David accepted the invitation, Michal declined
  • In Kevin’s travels, he is dismayed to discover that the average Christian more easily hears the condemnations of the Father of Lies, rather than the encouragement of the Father of Love.

David Had To Let Go of:

  1. Fear
  • “What will people think?”
  • Mark Twain: “I’m an old man; I’ve known many troubles, most of which never happened.”
  • At least 365 verses: “Fear Not”
  • Kevin gave an abridged testimony of his childhood of anxiety, which resurfaced in his 40s.
  • It was a lose-lose. For Michal, she would not deal with this. It mattered to her what people thought.
  • When fear rules your life, you lose:
    • Self-esteem.
    • Destiny – Michal lost her destiny as queen of the nation
    • Joy
  • 1 John 4:18 “perfect love casts out all fear”
  • Kevin gave a very funny testimony of a prayer march around his church, which he was expected to lead, but he felt very silly to do so. He had to overcome it. It took 4 laps.
  1. Dunno – Come back tonight for the rest of this message
  2. Dunno
  3. Dunno

We finished up praying for those who stood up for “fear of man” (about half the church).

Why I Am A Creationist

If Millions of Years Were True…

  • Every body of water would have didymo;
  • Every living organism would have had Swine Flu;

It stands to reason; the universe is running down; entropy is increasing; environments are mixing.  If millions of years were true, then at least some animal would have been infected by X and spread the infection from one place to another.  There would be no such thing as a pristine environment.

But belief in evolution has doesn’t require reason.  It’s a belief system that is devoid of facts.  It’s central tenant is “what possibly outlandish explanation can we invent in order to negate the reality of a Creator God?”

Why I Am A Christian

Because the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

Here’s a good example: Fisking Ian Hassall: The Arbitrary Ethical Reasoning on the Smacking Referendum

But Christians know how to have fun in church

Here’s an Epic Wedding:  And yes, I am making an assumption that only Christians would feel comfortable enough in their own church to risk big.

Why I Am Pro-Life

Italian UN Surprise Intrigues Pro-Lifers

By Piero A. Tozzi and Aracely Ornelas

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  Italy’s Parliament passed an emphatic measure last week directing the Italian government to push for a United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution that "condemns the use of abortion as an instrument of demographic control and affirms the right of each woman not to be forced to undergo abortion." The move has surprised pro-life observers at the UN, where Italy almost invariably supports the European Union (EU) majority in measures hostile to the rights of the unborn. The parliamentary effort was led by Rocco Buttiglione, head of the Union of Christian Democrats, with the support of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s governing People of Freedom Party and the Center Democrats. Leftist parliamentarians sought to dilute the proposal by tacking on a rider promoting contraceptives, but this was voted down.

Feminists Plan Commemorative "Beijing +15" Reproductive Rights Push

By Lisa Giunta

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  The "NGO Committee on Women" met last week at UN headquarters in New York to plan commemorations marking the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women (Beijing +15) next March. While planning committee organizers billed the anniversary as a cause for celebration, many meeting participants voiced dismay at what they see as a lack of women’s progress since 1995 and called on their colleagues to use the anniversary to demand more from governments, particularly in the area of "sexual and reproductive health and rights." Representatives of various feminist non-governmental organizations (NGOs) pointed out that the Beijing Conference has no legal status and that it was therefore not important to reaffirm the Beijing Conference as written.   Read more

Why I Am A Homeschooler

Aimee and I had an “Aha” moment this week

It was to do with her failing to achieve in recorder class.

So, we practiced for 5 minutes each night before bed, over the 2 weeks of holidays.

Now, she realises she can play the recorder.

Now, she’s re-enthused to learn the rest of the book.

I had the pleasure of watching the light switch on.

Why should good teachers get all those moments?  Why should bad teachers get away with killing those moments?

Dementia  Quiz

Below are four (4) questions and a Bonus question to test your perception, reasoning and the quickness of your logical processing. They are stated simply so you should try to answer them instantly.  To assure the accuracy of the results, you  should not take your time, but instead, answer each of them immediately.

Let’s find out just how clever you really are…..

Ready? GO!!! (scroll down slowly to uncover Q’s and A’s )

First Question :

You are a participant in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

Answer : If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely WRONG! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, YOU are in second place!

Try not to screw up next time. Now answer the second question, but don’t take as much time as you took for the first question, OK?

Second Question :

If you overtake the last person, then you are…?
(scroll down)

Answer : If you answered that you are second to last, then you are  ; ; ; ;WRONG again. Tell me Sunshine, how can you overtake the LAST person??

You’re not very good at this, are you?

Third Question :

Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator.
Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 Now add 30 . Add another 1000 . Now add 20 . Now add another 1000. Now add 10 . What is the total?

Scroll down for the correct answer…..

Did you get 5000 ?

The correct answer is actually 4100 .

If you don’t believe it, check it with a calculator!
Today is definitely not your day, is it ?

Maybe you’ll get the last question right… Maybe…

Fourth Question :

Mary’s father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini,  4. Nono, and ???  What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Did you Answer Nunu? NO! Of course it isn’t.
Her name is Mary Read the question again!

Okay, now the Bonus round,

i.e., a final chance to redeem yourself:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

It’s really very simple
He opens his mouth and ask for it…
Does your employer actually pay you to think??
If so Do NOT let them see your answers for this test!

Have a nice day, one and all..

Making a Killing

The Untold Story of Psychotropic Drugging

“The facts are hard to believe, but fatal to ignore”

Presented by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights

A tale of deception…

Psychotropic drugs.  It’s the story of big money – drugs that fuel a $330 billion psychiatric industry, without a single cure.  The cost in human terms is even greater – these drugs now kill an estimated 42,000 people every year.  And the death count keeps rising.

Containing more that 175 interviews with lawyers, mental health experts, the families of victims and the survivors themselves, this riveting documentary rips the mask off psychotropic drugging and exposes a brutal but well-entrenched money-making machine.

About 90 minutes.  Rated M: Suitable for Mature Audiences 16 Years and over.  NOTE: Drug references. © 2008.

I was offered this free DVD in a mass-marketing email, I suspect.  I don’t actually remember who sent me the original email, although I do remember sending for the DVD.  I was caught by the publishers name.  I thought it was the NZ Human Rights Commission.  Instead I discovered it is an American charity (albeit with a NZ chapter).  What’s more, upon closer inspection, it was “established in 1969 by the Church of Scientology to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human rights.”

Now, the Christian Church is a many varied and splendid thing.  Some may even go so far as to say splintered.  I do not.  I believe the protestant reformation had to happen, but it didn’t have to happen the way it did.  If Martin Luther’s temperament was slightly less volatile, we might still have a unified Church.  But that is a question for another time.

The fact is that the invisible, universal and Christian Church is identified by it’s adherence to the infallible Word of God.  And Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses and Christian Scientists just don’t cut the mustard.

Nevertheless, where they have a portion of truth, I’m more than happy to go along with them, for a time.  And in this arena, they have some very good points to make.  I have long been sceptical of claims of scientists to infallible knowledge.  Evolutionary science is one case in point.  But psychiatric medicine has also seemed to be a load of mumbo jumbo.  And this video helps point me in the direction of the facts.

To be fair, I felt manipulated by the music and the mock interviews.  I think viewing the entire video in one sitting, I began seeing behind the earnestness of the interviewees to some of the interviewer techniques.  I can begin to perceive how someone might be brain-washed into becoming a Christian Scientist by the subtle influence this DVD began to exert.  Nowhere did it proselytise their religion, but the DVD came with some follow-up paper-work, which is aimed at getting you onto their database.

I’m tempted to allow myself to be followed up, but only because it amuses me to distract their evangelistic fervour.

So, I would recommend this DVD to any strong Christian wishing to learn the truth behind why people like Tom Cruise are so anti-psychiatry.
