Hippolite Musings

Thought for the Day

Gentlemen,

Now I’ve done it.  I accidently ran over and killed one of Aimee’s (two) pet rabbits.  There is nothing more distraught than a seven year old girl who’s just lost one of her beloved pets.  It nearly broke my heart to witness her anguish.

She was almost beside herself with grief, but to her credit did not irrationally blame me.  I had to control my 10-year old son’s enthusiasm at telling her the bad news.  Not that I believe Hamish was attempting to be malicious in the least, just his normal tactless self.

Even 12 year old Tane was impacted, surprisingly.  This has turned out to be a family tragedy of the highest order.  The tangi was on Monday.

Blessings,
James

Prime Minister’s claims of referendum question confusion are really confusing!!!

The Kiwi Party

Press Release

1 July, 2009

“John Key has recently adopted the simplistic tactic of trying to discredit the referendum by complaining about the question being confusing, but the only person that is confused seems to be himself,” said Kiwi Party Leader Larry Baldock.

“He seems to have forgotten that when the petition was first launched March 1st, 2007 National party MPs were very involved in helping us to collect signatures. Many of them even had the petition in their electorate offices at various places across the country. If they thought the question was confusing why would they help to collect signatures to make the referendum become a reality?

“And would they have done this without the knowledge and approval of John Key?

"Unfortunately once the anti-smacking law had been passed after John Key’s amendment deal with Helen Clark the National MPs were told they were no longer allowed to collect signatures.

"The Prime Minister has often said he didn’t want good parents criminalised for a light smack.

Prime Minister they now are, so do you want it to remain that way or not? Answer ‘Yes’ if you do, and ‘No’ if you don’t. It is really that simple!

“The high response or 25,000 people responding in just two weeks to enrol or update their enrolment with the electoral enrolment centre shows that unlike John Key and Phil Goff, Kiwis understand the question and are keen to have their say,” said the petition organiser, Larry Baldock.

Dear James

I was reading your comments on the book “The Shack”.  Below are some thoughts of my own on the book.

Putting Words in the Mouth of God

I have not read “The Shack” by Wm. Paul Young all the way through. I got stuck and
to be honest a little incensed at some dialogue on page 96.

“Mack was surprised. ‘At the cross? Now wait, I thought you left him
you know – ‘My God my God why hast thou forsaken me?’” It was a
scripture that had often haunted Mack in The Great Sadness”.

(God speaking) “You misunderstand the mystery here. Regardless
of what he felt at that moment, I never left him”.

Say what? Regardless of what he felt at that moment, I never left him”.

This is saying that what Jesus felt was not real. I not a theologian but my understanding is if His separation from God was not real then the cross was a lie. I believe that part of Christs’ suffering on the cross was to experience TOTAL separation from the Father as all who do not accept Christ will endure for eternity. I believe God HAD to look away from Jesus on the cross as he cannot look at sin. Jesus was our scapegoat. Our sins were placed on him while he was on the cross. While the sins of the world were on Jesus, I do believe God really did forsake Him Jesus. One may wonder why Jesus even had to ask “My God My God, why have you forsaken me”.

If He was truly the Son of God would he not know what was going on? Was he just being poetic?

Was he just quoting scripture? (Psalm 22:1). My view is that because Jesus had been all His earthly life in constant communion with the Father, at that moment where he was under the full wrath of God he was at his most fully human. I beleive he felt the REALITY of what was happening.

If Jesus was not experiencing the REAL thing then the cross is a sham and God is a liar.

I’m not saying the book is not helping people who have been through this level of tragedy in their lives but I do have concerns about it. To me the Bible is the word of God. I’m cautious with writers taking their own interpretation of scripture, mixing it with personal experience and then writing dialogue for the mouth of God.

Cheers
Paul Hibbs

  • “What is God’s plan for my life?”

The greatest question you can ever ask!

  • “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
  • Jeremiah 29:11

An immature heart can deceive us

  • Can’t make decision based on just what we feel at the time
  • God has given us a mind to use as well
  • “Be very careful how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is”
  • Eph 5:15-17

Our temptation is to ask this question:

  • How close can I go in this circumstance without experiencing the consequences?
  • Is it legal? Is it moral? Is it permissible? Chapter and verse please!
  • Example: how close to the edge could you drive your vehicle over a mountain pass?
  • Model Answer: dunno, I just keep my eye on the hillside and hug the hill
  • Explanation: stick with God, obey Him, concentrate on what God calls you to do, not what is outside his area of blessing

Bob prayed words of knowledge over various people:

  • Ike & Jess, have an anointing of being a blessing to others through their creative endeavours
  • Duncan Brown has an anointing of financial/business knowledge
  • Another couple I don’t know, a blessing of unity
  • Matt Scarlet and fiancée a blessing of complementary strengths

The greatest question we can ever ask is

  • “Is this the wise thing for me to do?”

3 levels to ask: What is the wisest thing to do in light of:

  1. My past experiences?
    1. E.g. what happened the last time I attended that office party?
    2. Or, what happened the last time I went out with the boys?
  2. My current circumstance?
    1. E.g. If I’m just rebounding from a relationship, give myself time (like a year) to recover from the soul wound
  3. My future hopes and dreams?
    1. E.g. what kind of person do I want to be in 5,10,20,50 years?
    2. What kind of person do I want to be with?

There is hope for you

  • If any of you lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who give generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to them.
  • James 1:5

Your greatest act of wisdom is to receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour

  • He heals your past (justification; He was)
  • He helps your present (salvation; He is)
  • He assures your future (glorification; He shall be)

Why I Am A Christian

Roswell prayer request

CMI’s Gary Bates has been afforded a landmark opportunity at the annual Roswell UFO Festival. This gathering attracts tens of thousands based on the belief that this New Mexico town is where a real spacecraft landed, covered up by government, etc. (But see What really happened at Roswell?) For the first time, this UFO festival features a Christian Symposium on Aliens, at which Gary will be a keynote speaker (Saturday July 4). Since the publication of his landmark book Alien Intrusion Gary has become regarded as the foremost Christian authority on the “evolution connection” and allied spiritual aspects behind this disturbing phenomenon. This is an amazing opportunity—many, if not most “Christian UFO followers” accept the evolutionary/long-age scenario including belief in alien spacecraft, etc. And there will likely be large numbers of non-Christians present, too. Please pray for Gary in this “alien-charged” atmosphere with its substantial occult overtones, and pray for a major impact for the creation/gospel message.

New creation cosmology

CMI physicist Dr Russell Humphreys has proposed a new time-dilation creation cosmology that solves the distant starlight problem for relatively close stars. See his introductory article on our website and his paper in the Journal of Creation. (Dr Humphreys, the author of Starlight and Time, and CMI speaker Prof. John Hartnett, who has authored Starlight, Time and the New Physics, are on very friendly terms and have long encouraged each other and referred to the need for more, not less, creationist models of cosmology).

Dino protein critics

The discovery of proteins in dinosaur bones (as we previously reported) is a headache for evolutionists and other long-agers. But surprisingly, there are some even in the creationist fold who wonder why creationists should be elated. A recent feedback response, Dino proteins and blood vessels: are they a big deal? shows why protein survival for millions of years is beyond even the most optimistic interpretation of real chemical data on breakdown rates. But proteins surviving a year-long flood is most plausible, based on real chemistry. And see further feedback in Ancient proteins and bugs, and vegan cats.

The game of Spore and Christianity

Our article Spore: new game allows players to evolve creatures; should creationists be concerned? has evidently been discovered by a number of atheopaths who are spreading it around in anger. At least this seems to be behind the influx of recent attacks, quite some time after it appeared on our front page. The author’s response to several critics from around the world covers Bible reliability, scientific problems with evolution, and Christian v atheistic atrocities.

What? More than one universe?

To explain away the fine-tuning of our universe, many anti-theists resort to “Multiverse theory”. This postulates an infinite number of universes, of which ours just happens to have the right physical constants for life. This alleged multiverse is unobservable even in principle, so fails to qualify as science. Yet the magazine New Scientist claims that this unscientific conjecture is better, since they won’t allow a divine foot in the door. See refutation by Gary Bates: Multiverse theory—unknown science or illogical raison d’être? New Scientist columnist falls on her own sword. We have previously documented this magazine’s christophobia in Refutation of New Scientist’s Evolution: 24 myths and misconceptions.

Obama Administration Calls for Universal Access to Abortion at UN Meeting

By Samantha Singson

(NEW YORK – C-FAM)  At United Nations (UN) headquarters this week, the Obama administration continued its push for ever increasing access to legal abortion around the world. The Obama team has introduced language that has thrown a high level negotiation into a roil. The US proposal calls for “universal access” to “sexual and reproductive health services including universal access to family planning.” The document under consideration will culminate in the 2009 Annual Ministerial Review, which convenes next week in Geneva. The sticking point for many delegations and what has driven apart the usual solid European bloc is the use of the word “services” in the context of “reproductive health.”

Recent WHO Report Presents Skewed Data to Advance Abortion Agenda

By Elizabeth Walsh

(WASHINGTON, DC – C-FAM)  In its recently released annual report on the state of global health, the World Health Organization (WHO) presents statistics that misleadingly appear to place maternal mortality on par with other global killers like malaria and HIV/ AIDS. This new approach contradicts other WHO reports where maternal mortality does not even make the top ten of global killers, ranking somewhere lower than car accident fatalities

Why I Am A Homeschooler

I attended my children’s Saturday morning music lessons.  I was appalled.

Like all normal NZ parents, I had assumed that the teachers who were skilled in their craft, also knew how to teach.  I was wrong.

The recorder teacher only had six 7-year-old girls.  How hard is it to maintain discipline with that number of kids?  Very, apparently.

The drum teach had the opposite problem.  He had strict control, but doesn’t know or understand the meaning of the word encouragement.  His mode of teaching was 15 seconds of instruction, followed by 5 minutes of berating for misinterpreting said brief instructions.

It’s obvious to me that the majority of learning will actually take place when I rehearse with the children at home. i.e. Homeschooling.

Humour

Poorly Placed Trust

The story is told that a national magazine assigned a photographer to take pictures of a forest fire. They told him a small plane would be waiting at the airport to fly him over the fire.

The photographer arrived at the airstrip just an hour before sundown. Sure enough, a small Cessna airplane stood waiting. He jumped in with his equipment and shouted, "Let’s go!" The pilot, a tense-looking man, turned the plane into the wind, and soon they were in the air, though flying erratically.

"Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make several low-level passes."

"Why?" asked the nervous pilot.

"Because I’m going to take pictures!" yelled the photographer. "I’m a photographer, and photographers take pictures."

The pilot replied, "You mean you’re not the flight instructor?"

Chicken Surprise

A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the ‘Chicken Surprise’,
The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot.

Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.

‘Good grief, did you see that?’ she asks her husband.

He hasn’t, so she asks him to look in the pot.

He reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down.

Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening, and demands an explanation.

‘Please sir,’ says the waiter, ‘what you order?’

The husband replies, ‘Chicken Surprise.’

‘Ah! So sorry,’ says the waiter, ‘I bring you Peeking Duck!’

Review

A great container of orthodox doctrine in relation to the spiritual realm.  I would have no qualms about sharing this publication with any New Age/Pagan/Wiccan to explain our side of the story.  Very small text.
